Learning Disability Week
17th June 2019 - 23rd June 2019
Learning Disability Week (LDW) is Mencap’s chance to celebrate locally and nationally all things learning disability and launch campaigns or highlight specific issues affecting people with a learning disability. Run annually on the third week of June, LDW is a great opportunity for everyone with a passion for improving the quality of life for people with a learning disability to come together and raise awareness. BRINGING PEOPLE WITH AND WITHOUT LEARNING DISABILITIES TOGETHER THROUGH SPORT The aim for our partnership is to bring people with and without a learning disability together through sport. Sport and activity are such a vital part of daily life and there are many benefits to being active and keeping fit such as: • Lowering the chance of health problems like diabetes and heart disease • Learning new skills and improving confidence • Making friends and reducing social isolation • Being part of a community Inclusion remains one of the biggest battles for people with a learning disability. Children with special educational needs (SEN) are twice as likely as other children to be bullied regularly1. We know that reducing the stigma and discrimination attached to learning disability is key to making a difference. To help us get there, we need to increase the visibility of people with a learning disability – in the media and beyond.
