Paul Moser Chair of Trustees

Paul has been on the Hertsmere Mencap Committee and Chair or Vice-Chair for many years. In his career, he ran an IT distribution company specialising in the African market and when he retired in 2013, took over the reins as Chairman.

Having a son with learning disabilities, he developed a close interest and involvement in the sector and is associated with both Mencap and with a London-based care provider.

Paul gets great satisfaction from his involvement with so many of our members. He says “my vision is for Hertsmere Mencap to reach out to each and every learning-disabled person (and their families) in the area and be able to provide support at whatever level he or she might need”

Tony Walton Vice Chair

Tony Walton has been associated with Hertsmere Mencap since 1981, after he was elected as a Hertfordshire County Councillor and was put on the Social Services Committee.  Tony has previously been Chair of Hertsmere Mencap and is now Vice Chair and a Trustee.

Tony’s professional life was in financial services, latterly on the compliance side as a business analyst. Before retiring Tony worked for Royal Mencap for 5 years.

Tony says “I enjoy working with the members and I learn something new every week”

Outside of Hertsmere Mencap, Tony loves being with his family.

Krishna Chandak Treasurer

Krishna joined Hertsmere Mencap in Dec 2019, as Treasurer Trustee.

Along with this, Krishna is working for a leading investment bank.

Krishna is very passionate about giving back to the Society and hence believes that a Treasurer role is a perfect one for him.

Outside of work, Krishna enjoys spending time travelling and cricket.

Susan Moser Trustee

Susan is a Trustee and Committee Member and has been part of Hertsmere Mencap, including being Chair for over 40 years.

Susan has been involved with fundraising, organising social events and drama activities.

She is especially proud of encouraging members to fulfil their potential by taking on specific roles within the Society

Edmund Grower Trustee

Edmund is a practising solicitor, Trustee of Hertsmere Mencap and Chairman of our Golf Day Committee, which is our biggest annual fundraising event.

Edmund is also the Honorary Secretary of our Society and plays a unique role at our Christmas parties.

In his spare time, Edmund enjoys playing golf and following cricket and football, especially West Ham United.



David Diamond Trustee

David joined Hertsmere Mencap in December 2022.

David has worked within the financial services industry for 32 years across London, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

David has always been passionate about charity having raised funds by running marathons and hiking for various charitable causes. Taking on a trusteeship is his way of continuing to serve others that are in need.

David’s other interests include cycling, golf, travelling and cooking.
  



Karen Snyder Head of Communications

Karen joined Hertsmere Mencap in February 2021. Prior to this, Karen worked in various marketing roles. When she read the Head of Communication job description, she said “I knew immediately this was a role I would love to do.”

Karen said “I love the variety of my role, I enjoy spending time with our members and working to increase awareness of who we are and what we do. I love being busy and challenged”

Outside of work Karen loves spending time with her family and friends and going to the theatre.

Adam Pratten Stone Head of Development

Adam joined Hertsmere Mencap in September 2022. Prior to this, he had worked part-time as a Community Development Manager alongside being a stay-at-home father to two young boys.

Adam’s background and experience is in planning events for children and adults and he is at his most creative when being challenged. He says “I am really excited and looking forward to interacting with members at activities and listening and developing their ideas, providing them with opportunities to enjoy new experiences”.

In Adam’s little spare time that he has, between working, chauffeuring his kids about and keeping his home tidy, he loves unwinding on holiday at an all inclusive Spanish resort with a cocktail in his hand. You’ll also probably see him walking the streets of Borehamwood getting his 10,000 steps in a day, so be sure to say hi!

Hayley Bentley Activities Coordinator

Hayley joined Hertsmere Mencap in February 2022. Prior to this Hayley managed Trust Funds for people with disabilities and has worked for several charities, working on fundraising and events planning.

 “I jumped at the chance of coordinating Hertsmere Mencap’s adult daily activities.  I am so excited to be part of a fabulous team, supporting our members and organising fun filled activities” 

Hayley’s hobbies include walking, talking, theatre and socialising with family and friends.

Alyson Brown Clubs Manager

Alyson has been running the popular Jubilee Club for Mencap since 2019.

Alyson said “I have had so many good times and laughs with the members. We have such fun with the different activities we host.  All the members are our friends and it is a pleasure to spend time with them all”

Alyson joined Hertsmere Mencap’s Children’s Holiday Club in 2010 as Head Play Leader. Alyson has supported many families over the years with valuable respite care and she has enjoyed every minute.  “Little did I know then that it would be a huge part of my life and not just a job. Both my daughters are involved too, so it’s a real family affair”

Susannah Shackleton Children and Youth Coordinator

Susannah joins Hertsmere Mencap in August 2023. Prior to this, she had over 20 years experience in Early Years education, with an emphasis on supporting young children with additional needs and their families.

Susannah said “I have now found my perfect job working with the most wonderful team, coordinating activities and holiday clubs for our children and youth members“

Susannah’s hobbies include Zumba, taking part in 26 mile walks to raise money for charities, musical theatre and spending time with her wonderful family and friends.

Michelle Benson Arts & Crafts Leader

Michelle joined Hertsmere Mencap in February 2023

Angie Bluffield Dance Aerobics Leader

Angie joined Hertsmere Mencap in May 2019 as the Dance Aerobics instructor having trained in Inclusive dance.  Angie said “The sessions are lively, entertaining and the members are great fun to work with. I look forward to running the sessions every week”

Since 2012 Angie has been running “Angie’s Dance Academy UK” offering weekly classes to both children and adults alongside running dance classes for other organisation, as well as working for Canada Life Ltd as a Medical Assessment Specialist. 

Outside of work and dance, Angie loves to spend time relaxing at home watching a movie or catching up with friends and family over a nice meal & a glass of wine

Sian Kenrick Drama Leader

Sian has worked with children and adults with Learning Disabilities, Autism and physical disabilities for over 20 years.

Sian has worked with Hertsmere Mencap since 2016, leading sessions in Drama, Movement & Music with instruments and sessions in Chair Yoga Relaxation.

Sian Says ” Leading the drama sessions is always great fun. At the heart of each session are the wonderful members, who are a joy to be with and teach me so much about friendship & kindness. It is fantastic to be part of the team”.

In her spare time Sian loves to spend time with her family and is studying Complementary Medicine & is a Mental Health First Aider. 

Amber Bright Clubs Deputy

Amber is our Clubs Deputy for our adult and children’s clubs.

Amber says “Working for Hertsmere Mencap is really rewarding, seeing the adults and children happy and able to be themselves makes it all worth while”.

When she is not working for Hertsmere Mencap, Amber works in a nursery and is keen to focus her career on children with Special Educational Needs.

In her spare time Amber enjoys going to the gym, walking, swimming and pamper evenings. 

Neil Hoskins Member Transport Officer & Deputy Member Liaison Officer

Neil has been involved with Hertsmere Mencap since he was 13 years old when his father was Hertsmere Mencap’s Transport Officer.

Neil contributes to making the lives of our members happy and fulfilled.  Neil said “It gives me joy to see other people less able, being able to do things that they would have never been able to do”

Neil is an Expert by Experience, working at Hertfordshire County Council.

Vicky Wallis Member Liaison Officer

Vicky became Member Liaison Officer in 2014. Vicky is on hand to talk to our members and make sure everyone is okay.

Vicky also volunteers at our children’s Holiday Club. Vicky said “I enjoy the Playscheme, it is hard work, challenging and lots of fun. I like playing with the children, mixing with different people and making friends with the staff”

Glyn Thomas Hertsmere Mencap Ambassador

Glyn has been a member of Hertsmere Mencap for 20 years. In 2021, Glyn became Ambassador and his role was vital during lockdown. Glyn made sure he regularly spoke to our members on the phone and gave them hope during this difficult period. 

Glyn is also the doorman on the Hertsmere Mencap mini bus, he said “We have a laugh on the minibus, I am the doorman and I help the driver get everyone on and off the bus”

Michael Capocci Committee Member

Michael has been a member of Hertsmere Mencap since April, 2016. In 2018, Michael joined Hertsmere Mencap’s committee and has been a vocal member ever since, regularly sharing his thoughts and views. 

Michael regularly attends our daily activities. Michael said “I’m a people person, I was bored before I joined Hertsmere Mencap, now I enjoy making new friends and being around people”

Michael is an active member of Borehamwood’s Visually Impaired Club.

Karen Clissold Committee Member

Karen has been involved in Hertsmere Mencap for a very long time and enjoys getting together and chatting with her Hertsmere Mencap friends.

In 2021, Karen officially joined Hertsmere Mencap’s Committee and she said “I enjoy being involved with Hertsmere Mencap and talking about what is going on and what is coming up”.

Gavin Kennedy Electric Umbrella Representative

Gavin has been involved in Hertsmere Mencap since he was a child, when he went to our children’s Holiday Club. As an adult, Gavin has been a regular member of Hertsmere Mencap.

For the last few years, Gavin has been part of Electric Umbrella and has enjoyed writing and performing songs with his Electric Umbrella friends.

In 2020, Gavin joined Hertsmere Mencap’s Committee as the Electric Umbrella Representative. He said, “I enjoy making friends at Hertsmere Mencap and contributing at Committee Meetings”.

Sandra Lewis Committee Member

Sandra has been involved with Hertsmere Mencap for 14 years. She began as our Admin Secretary for eleven years and now regularly volunteers. Sandra says “I love seeing our members regularly, we always have fun together”

Sandra also volunteers at Radlett theatre and in her spare time loves aqua aerobics and spending time with her three grandchildren.

 

Caroline Boydell Committee Member

Caroline has been a member of the Hertsmere Mencap committee for a number of years.

Previous to this she managed an Animal Welfare Charity in the USA and worked as a counsellor for the NHS.

Caroline says “Under Paul’s leadership the charity has grown so positively since I joined.  I so enjoy the company of the members and of fellow volunteers”

Pat Brown Member Birthday Coordinator

Pat Brown has been involved with Hertsmere Mencap since 1970, making her our longest serving member. In 1997, Pat took over the very important role of sending out birthday cards to our members. “Hertsmere Mencap is so friendly and helpful engaging with people who have learning disabilities”.

Pat also loves knitting for charity, crosswords and listening to music from the 60’s and 70’s, her favourite singer is Daniel O’Donnell

Pat said “Working at Hertsmere Mencap is incredibly rewarding, all of the members and volunteers are exceptionally friendly and overall create a really warm and welcoming community”

Estelle Talberg Admin Secretary

Estelle joined Hertsmere Mencap in July 2021 as Volunteer Administrator. She comes with years of administration experience and wanted to give back her own time to this amazing charity.

Since getting involved she has also joined the Jubilee Club as a volunteer and simply loves it, “Volunteering with Hertmere Mencap is truly rewarding”.

Estelle spends her spare time being with her family, exploring new cities, cooking, walking and loving her dog, Pheobe.

Jill Crawley Policies and Procedures

Jill began volunteering with Hertsmere Mencap during the pandemic in 2021.

Jill works as a School Business Manager and wanted to offer her spare time during the holidays to help the community.

Jill likes meeting our members and interacting. She said “Volunteering gives me something special”

Jill’s hobbies are reading, travelling and learning Spanish.

Adult Activities

Join us for a range of weekly activities, such as arts and crafts, dance aerobics, drama and social clubs or just a coffee and chat.

Holiday Club

The Holiday Club runs for one week at Easter and four weeks during the Summer holidays, Monday – Friday 10.00am – 3.00pm. We also hold activity days during the Christmas holidays.
