Members

We support our adult and child members by providing a range of activities that reflect their interests and concerns.  The emphasis is on fun and enhancing Life Skills so that members are able to lead rewarding and fulfilling lives.

Within the organisation, there is a dedicated Support Group, which exists to provide members with individual support based on expertise both within and outside of the organisation. Support is holistic and embraces all aspects of a members’ lives.

Members are encouraged both formally through committees and informally to lend their voice to shape and develop our provision.

Staff and Volunteers

All staff and volunteers working with members are DBS checked and offered regular training opportunities in areas such as safeguarding, epilepsy, first aid and an introduction to learning disabilities. There is a Designated Safeguarding Lead for adults and children.

Initiatives

We host Hertsmere’s Learning Disability Forum every quarter. Our most recent Forum featured Hertsmere’s Adult Disability Team and we are looking forward to welcoming guests speakers to our next Forum on Wednesday 5th March 2025.

We participate in the Purple Star initiative which identifies services which provide high standards of care for Learning Disabled Adults. One of our members is on the adjudicating committee.

Emergency Services are regular visitors to our coffee mornings, facilitating trust and understanding between themselves and our members.

We encourage our members to see themselves as valued and active adults with their own unique contribution to share with the community.

Safeguarding

Hertsmere Mencap recognise the vital role the organisation can play in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the people we support. As a provider of services to adults and children with a learning disability, we recognise that people we support are vulnerable to abuse and we have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect them from harm, and to act on concerns when they come to our attention.

Our Designated Adult Safeguarding Lead is Karen Snyder. Karen can be contacted on 07938 722619 / hdcomm@hertsmeremencap.org.uk,

Our Designated Child Safeguarding Lead is Susannah Shackleton. Susannah can be contacted on 07727 339066 / childrenandyouth@hertsmeremencap.org.uk
